The Loudspeaker Developments for Laptop Acoustics
A compact and as thin as possible form factor is the mainstream of designing current laptops. That causes traditional round-shape speakers, which are limited by the diameter (i.e., length and width), to be unable to satisfy state-of-the-art laptops. So, almost all loudspeakers designed for laptops have rectangular shapes to enlarge the vibrating area under a compact and limited space, and the longer, narrower, and thinner dimensions are the direction for future developments.
The side effects of rectangular speakers with a high length-to-width ratio are that some components increase the costs and can not be manufactured if the ratio reaches too high. For instance, two- and multiple-motor (voice coil) designs increase the costs because the longer coil can’t be manufactured at a reasonable yield rate.
There is a solution for current laptop speakers. The voice coil, made by FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit), has fewer limitations for speakers with a high length-to-width ratio.
The speaker which has an FPC voice coil should be designed with a proper magnetic circuit and structure, it’s easy to develop relatively longer and narrower loudspeakers that have rectangular shapes.
