    Magnetic circuit

A proper design of magnetic circuit is one of the most important points for developing a successful speaker, because it directly impacts the sensitivities and cost. Using a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tool to find out the optimized structure of arranging magnets and low carbon steels could effectively save times and costs. All parameters we need are able to be verified before making the real samples.

Force factor (BL), the mass (weight) of moving parts, the stiffness of cone and the compliance of suspension system, all these parameters shape how a speaker sounds like. An obvious requirement, for example, high sensitivity, deep bass or low distortion… etc. will give the direction for driver design or the modifications to fine tune. Driver designers first arrange the key parameter and later balance with others to come out the qualified speakers.

The smart speaker is a quickly growing business in the current market of consumer electronic products in recent years. The most ID designs have a cylinder with a down-firing speaker that tries to radiate and spread sounds evenly in a 360-degree-spatial effect to satisfy a single or multiple users who will move around in home. The array microphones with a proper algorithm are the same concept to receive the sound from users. The geometry of diffuser and the distance between diffuser and speaker's diaphragm will influence how are the sounds spread out and radiated in the environment.

    Vibration analysis

To clearly recognize the commands from hosts' voice is important for a smart-home device, especially a smart speaker which plays music at the same time, and when talking to people on Internet, the capability of echo cancellation allows smooth communications. Both functions rely on the high quality of receiving path through microphone. The quality will be significantly impacted if the vibrations of the device's walls and/or components that are conducted from working speaker to microphones. We can build the simulation model to predict the situation then give solutions to prevent it in early design stage. Figure 1 shows a smart speaker which designs with four array microphones.

  • Sound reflections

    Sound reflections

In the market of consumer electronic s for audio products, some designs focus on sound performance and others might focus on ID appearances and prices. A unique ID sometimes limits the position of the loudspeakers. How can we get a balance between the ID appearances and acceptable sound performance? It's always a critical task for designers. Using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) tool to predict and analyze the influences of sound performance when the ID was initially locked down and the optimizing position of loudspeaker can be chosen.

    Box designs

Kingstate has powerful mechanical engineers and acoustic team. In many hard-to-develop acoustical products, the ability of designing speaker enclosures to meet customers’ requirements is certainly the one of Kingstate’s advantages. All speaker-box might be designed in varieties of shapes, and simulated by using COMSOL Multiphysics. We build simulation models to optimize our designs and reduce time and manufacturing costs.

    Filling material application

The most of the acoustic designs for consumer electronics such as laptop, tablet, A.I.O. system … etc. usually have limitations of box geometry and an optimized position for speakers to place on the box. The problems here are the improper geometry of box and the limited position to place the speaker which will induce standing wave inside the box then causing a glitch or disturbance on frequency response at specific frequency. That leads to an unwanted downgrade on sound quality. The issues can be predicted once the 3D drawing of box and selected speaker with defined position are defined.

A compact and as thinner as possible form factor is the mainstream of designing current laptops. That causes traditional round-shape speakers which are limited by the diameter (i.e. length and width) are not able to satisfy with state-of-the-art laptops. So almost all loudspeakers design for laptops have rectangular shape to enlarge the vibrating area under a compact and limited space, and the dimension of longer with narrower and thinner is the direction for the developments in the future. The side effects of the rectangular speakers which have high ratio of length by width are that some components increase the costs and even cannot be manufactured if the ratio reaches too high. For instance, two and multiple motors (voice coils) designs increase the costs because the longer coil can't be manufactured in a reasonable yield rate. There is a solution to deal with current laptop speakers. The voice coil which is made by FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) has fewer limitations for the speakers which have high ratio of length by width. The speaker which has a FPC voice coil should be designed with a proper magnetic circuit and structure; it’s easy to develop the relatively longer and narrower loudspeakers which are rectangular shapes.
