The Loudspeaker Developments for Laptop Acoustics
A compact and as thinner as possible form factor is the mainstream of designing current laptops. That causes traditional round-shape speakers which are limited by the diameter (i.e. length and width) are not able to satisfy state-of-the-art laptops. So almost all loudspeakers designed for laptops have rectangular shapes to enlarge the vibrating area under a compact and limited space, and the dimension of longer with narrower and thinner is the direction for developments in the future.
The side effects of the rectangular speakers which have a high ratio of length to width are that some components increase the costs and even can not be manufactured if the ratio reaches too high. For instance, two and multiple motors (voice coils) designs increase the costs because the longer coil can’t be manufactured at a reasonable yield rate.
There is a solution to deal with current laptop speakers. The voice coil which is made by FPC (Flexible Printed Circuit) has fewer limitations for the speakers which have a high ratio of length to width.
The speaker which has an FPC voice coil should be designed with a proper magnetic circuit and structure, it’s easy to develop relatively longer and narrower loudspeakers that have rectangular shapes.
